1. The Default Blendmodes
The Default blendmodes only change the transparency of the blend layer, they do not change the colour or brightness of the pixels. There are only two blendmodes in this group:
Normal
Dissolve
The standard blending mode: what you paint is what you see.
Should be self-explanatory, but here is an example anyway:

Randomly uses the base or blend colour, depending on the opacity of the layer.
The result is a noisy pattern. I don't think I ever found a use for this blending mode in texturing.
Update: Aaron Cross emailed me how this blendmode can be used to create skinpores or other patterns where small speckles are needed. Just set the opacity to a low value and you'll have fine speckly pattern.
